The Border Patrol

Border Collie Patrol, that is. My guestroom is across the hall from the bathroom. One dog tends to sleep in the living room at one end of the hall, and the other dog usually sleeps in the mudroom at the other end of the hall. Seventy-year-old guests need to get up to use the bathroom during the night. And that means crossing the hall.

It plays out something like this:

Guest crosses hallway and enters bathroom. One border collie cross gets up and puts nose to closed bathroom door. Said dog then shoves my bedroom door open: "Mom, mom, someone's in our bathroom! Intruder alert! Intruder alert!"

I tell her to go back to bed, but she is insistent. I decide maybe she needs out, so I get up and head to the back door, but she will have none of it. I close the babygate to temporarily contain her in the mudroom. Guest opens bathroom door and returns to bed. Second collie runs down the hallway and noses open my bedroom door. "Mom, mom, someone was walking around the house! Intruder alert! Intruder alert!"

I tell her to go back to bed, but she is insistent. I get up, try to get her to go outside for a pee but she just runs back and forth between me and the guestroom door to show me where the intruder is hiding.

I take both dogs outside for a pee, hoping to take their mind off the 'intruder'. As we come back in, the cat jumps out of her kitty condo and struts down the hall to the kitchen, meowing all the way. She's no dumb cat - she knows that when the dogs have their pee after a long sleep, it is BREAKFAST TIME!

It is 4:00 AM. I give up trying to sleep and feed the cat. The dogs, of course, are fast asleep at each end of the hallway, confident that Collie Nation is safe from intruders once again.

LOL, sounds familar! The first time my mom came to visit after I got Spike, he barked everytime she coughed, moved and or got up that night. It was kind of amusing... in the morning, he was so happy to see her again, and it was as if he'd forgotten it was her in the house! Funny!

Dogs are quirky, aren't they!

Georgia LP, here on the 'wet coast', houses often have a room just inside the back (or sometimes front) door where one can comfortably remove one's muddy boots or shoes, raingear, etc, as well as leave muddy sports gear and muddy dogs. Hence the name 'mud room'. In my home it was a third bedroom which I had converted into a storage and mud room when I had a door to the back yard put in. It tends to be Charley's favourite place to sleep and has two big dog beds in it.
