Great Horned Owl

A friend of mine (also named Jean) in the Bradner area of Abbotsford captured these pictures of a Great Horned Owl in her yard the other day. I've seen one in my pasture on two occasions, but I've never been able to get anywhere near close enough to photograph him/her, and its usually almost dark when I hear the WHOOOOO and see the silhouette.

The first two shots were taken just at sunrise, so are mostly sihouette. The third (amazing!) shot was taken a bit later in the morning. Click on the image to enlarge, for better viewing.

Thanks for sharing, other Jean - what a treat! (Photos used with permission of JDW)

Oh, Jean (both of you:)

Thank you. I am blown away by those pictures, and especially the third one. To see those eyes at such close range is a gift!

Hi, Jean. What a beautiful owl. We also live in the Bradner area. My daughter has seen in the past month on three different occasions what looks like a BARN owl in our tree at night when she closes the chicken coop. I haven't seen him for myself, but I did see one of these majestic Great Horned Owls last year sitting on a branch silhouetted by the moonlight one evening. It was absolutely mind-blowing - the beauty! Thanks for this post and thanks for your support for what I've been going through lately. I sure appreciate it - you are a gem!
