Trouble in Bloggerland

My McAfee Secure  system tells me that most of the blogging sites I visit (Haiku Farms, It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the time, Bully Buddies, A Collection of Madcap Escapades, Just Another Dog Blog, The Foster Report, Little Dogs on Long Leashes, Mountain Music, Bikesbirdsbeasts, to name just a few, have become infected with a dangerous virus.  Turtle Gardens and 7MSN don't seem to be affected.

Of course, it is possible that people trying to visit this site are also getting the "Whoa! Do you really want to go there" message, so won't read this, but I thought I'd try to let my cyberfriends know in case they want to run a scan on their computer.

If you are getting that message when you visit this site (but decided to risk everything and come here anyway), please let me know.  I've run a scan on my site and can't detect anything, but what the heck do I know about the evil world of technology?

Thanks Jean. I will get my man on it. Our computer is scheduled for automatic scans so I would be very upset if it was true. I think one of the blogs I visit got taken over by some Russian hacker a while back. And as you know, I get a lot of hits from Russia. It would suck mightily if true. ARRRRGH!

Man is checking from his office. He says if there's a virus, it wouldn't be on our computer but a problem with [the] Blogger [server] itself. Does that help?

Thanks GLP - my computer now tells me opening my own blog is "risky" too - but I opened it anyway and nothing horrible has happened yet. Not all the blogs that are triggering the alert are hosted by Blogger, which makes it even weirder. I tried googling the problem, but can't find anything about it that is recent - a similar problem seems to have occurred a couple of years ago, and it was related to Microsoft Office, Windows XP, and Adobe - all of which I use.

Jean, I'm not getting any of those messages at our common sites--but then we got a new Mac last Christmas, and they're supposed to be more virus-free. That wouldn't explain why you would be getting it on my blog...

Checking back. Both the man and I tried going into your friends' blog sites from different computers. No warnings. Whew! :)

No warnings here, Jean. I also have a mac, but I just went to a few of my regular sites and all seems to be fine. Hoping for the best!

Hi Aunty Jean. We're not getting the warnings here either. We're wondering if it's possible that your McAfee settings are out of whack? Are the other people who are getting those warnings using McAfee as well? Just a thought??

Well, I'm still getting the warnings on all those blogs, though nothing terrible seems to happen when I visit them. McAfee is provided by Shaw as part of my internet package - I don't think I have any control over the settings, but also haven't heard of anyone else who uses McAfee having this same problem. I tried emailing McAfee's support services yesterday morning but got no response. Guess I'll call Shaw today - that's a joke, they don't have real people in their service department as far as I can tell, and have yet to be able to help me with anything.
Probably time to call in a techy - McAfee also keeps arbitrarily shutting down my computer with the message "We have encountered a problem and must close this program....".
Have I mentioned I hate computers?

I brought up Just another Dog Blog and got no warning message. My (technically uneducated) guess would be that McAfee is causing the problems. AVG has a free Virus Protection that has worked well for me.

I think it's a McAfee screw up. My own site was popping up too as suspicious but I've checked it with both google (enter the following into an address bar http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site= after the = sign put in the domain address without the http stuff....) & on McAfee's site advisor http://www.siteadvisor.com/ (enter the address in the View a Site Report box in the middle right) & it's fine. I think it's some glitch somewhere. I finally disabled the McAfee safe search extension on my browser cause it was just being a pita.

Late to the party, sorry!

I've seen that before, and it's usually one "bad apple" that everybody else has on their sidebar. Like if all of us horse bloggers have Fugly Horse of the Day on our sidebars, and FHOTD (which isn't a .blogspot.com blog, but actually has its own hosting) gets a virus, all the rest of us LOOK like we have it. Does that make sense?

Anyway, Georgia's right and for most of us, it's blogger's problem and not something we did or can fix.

Hope that helps?

It looks like the problem has been fixed - at least, I'm no longer getting the scary messages. Funder, thanks for your explanation - that makes sense, as many of us are all linked by being on the same blogrolls.
I did finally get a response from McAfee, who claimed they couldn't see any problem and asked me to send a screenshot ...yeah, right, like I know how to do that!! Strangely, the WHOA message disappeared within minutes of my hearing from McAfee. Don'tcha love it when a company claims there's nothing wrong but coincidentally the problem disappears right after they tell ya that? My middle name is Sceptic.
